Apple has unveiled the iPhone 16e, its latest affordable smartphone, priced at $599. This marks the first update to Apple’s budget-friendly model since 2022, replacing the iPhone SE and bringing advanced artificial intelligence (A.I.) features to a broader audience.
Key Features of the iPhone 16e
The iPhone 16e includes Apple’s A.I. system, known as Apple Intelligence, which offers features like notification summaries and writing suggestions in English. Apple plans to expand these A.I. capabilities to other languages, including Chinese, Portuguese, and localized English for India, in the coming months.
The phone is unlocked using Face ID, a facial recognition system that has been standard on most iPhones since 2017. This update also means the complete phase-out of the home button and Touch ID on Apple’s budget models.
Why the iPhone 16e Matters
Apple’s introduction of the iPhone 16e comes at a critical time for the company. Its iPhone sales have been sluggish, with revenue falling 2 percent from a peak of $205.5 billion in 2022. Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, attributed some of this downturn to the limited availability of Apple Intelligence, which was initially offered only on the latest models in select English-speaking markets. Cook mentioned that in regions where A.I. features were available, they did help boost sales.
However, analysts like Jeff Fieldhack, research director at Counterpoint Research, are skeptical about A.I. being a major motivator for phone purchases. “People are buying phones for the same reasons they always have: the battery isn’t recharging or the phone is aging and not working,” Fieldhack said.
The higher price of the iPhone 16e—40 percent more than the previous iPhone SE, which sold for $429—could also impact its reception. However, Apple stands to benefit from the $170 price increase on each entry-level phone sold. This will likely bolster total revenue, especially as the overall number of phones Apple sells annually has remained relatively steady at around 230 million units.
A Changing Competitive Landscape
Apple’s decision to raise prices comes at a time of tariff-related uncertainty. Although former President Trump imposed a 10 percent tariff on all Chinese imports, Apple’s decision to increase prices is likely unrelated to these tariffs. Richard Kramer, partner at Arete Research, explained that “these decisions are made months before action is taken. This is the start of Apple lifting prices across the range at a time when volume growth is pretty moribund.”
Apple also faces increased competition overseas. In China, the company’s second-largest market, Apple’s share of smartphone sales dropped 2.4 percentage points to 15.5 percent last year, while rivals like Huawei made significant gains. In India, one of the world’s fastest-growing smartphone markets, Apple’s iPhone 15 was the top-selling smartphone during the final three months of last year. This success helped Apple increase its market share in India to 11 percent.
New Hardware Innovations
The iPhone 16e also introduces Apple’s first custom-designed modem chip, the C1. This chip provides 5G connectivity and replaces the Qualcomm modem chips used in previous iPhones. Apple has been working on developing its modem chip since 2019, following a settlement of its lawsuit with Qualcomm and the purchase of Intel’s modem business.
Ben Bajarin, CEO of Creative Strategies, noted that Apple’s custom modem might not yet match all the features offered by Qualcomm’s chips. However, it provides Apple with an opportunity to test the chip’s performance before rolling it out across future iPhone models. “Eventually, Apple’s custom modem will improve the battery performance of iPhones and bring wireless connectivity to other Apple products,” Bajarin said. He also speculated that the chip could extend to products like iPads and Macs.
A Subdued Launch
Unlike previous iPhone launches, Apple introduced the iPhone 16e with relatively little fanfare. The company released a 13-minute film on its website, featuring Tim Cook discussing the phone’s features. This low-key presentation contrasts with the one-hour event held at Apple’s Cupertino headquarters for the iPhone SE’s launch in 2022.
Apple’s latest offering aims to bring A.I. technology to more users and strengthen its foothold in growing markets. With a higher price point and new hardware features, the iPhone 16e may help Apple address slowing sales while fending off competition.
